Anticipation, Books

I’m currently at work, counting down the hours until I can go to Barnes and Noble (I know, I know, but Webster’s probably isn’t going to be selling what I’m looking for . . . the never-ending dilemma of small, independent bookstores vs. the big box stores — also, I need another reason excuse to go to B&N to get a pumpkin spice latte!) and pick up Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life, which hits bookstores today. I thought about pre-ordering, but there’s just something about the event it all becomes (this is also why I would rather wait and pick up an album from a local record store than listen to it online if it leaks). I’m very into anticipation.

I was first introduced to Donald Miller by a couple people I worked with at Pura Vida Missions in Costa Rica the summer of 2005, and sometimes when I look back through Blue Like Jazz, I still remember the first time I picked it up. It was rainy and chilly and I was looking after the little snack shop (pulperia) we had set up for the kids. I didn’t want to leave. I probably got about a third of the way through, then was called away. I bought it as soon as I could after I got back to PA.

Audrey Niffenegger’s
second book, Her Fearful Symmetry, also comes out today. I’ve read mixed reviews so far, but I’m trying to keep an open mind. I don’t know that anything could be as beautiful as The Time Traveler’s Wife, but I’d like to be pleasantly surprised.

I am super excited to get these books, but I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to read them. I have a stack of Chomsky and Kundera that I just got from the library, so I’ll need to get through that first. So much to look forward to and enjoy!

What are you reading these days?

  1. After finishing, 25,000 Years of Erotic Freedom today, I was inspired to read some Oscar Wilde. I checked out A Woman of No Importance and An Ideal Husband. Also, I’ve been wanting to read Naked Lunch for a while so I also checked that out. While I was in the neighborhood, I checked out another Burroughs book, The Cat Inside Me and a collection of letters exchanged between Burroughs and Ginsberg. I’ve also been reading film theory and a lot of my own writing.

  2. I’m really enjoying the snippets of The Cat Inside Me that you read while we play music. I’m curious to see if it will be well-received at Chuck’s Farm. I will love it regardless!
