I’m currently at work, counting down the hours until I can go to Barnes and Noble (I know, I know, but Webster’s probably isn’t going to be selling what I’m looking for . . . the never-ending dilemma of small, independent bookstores vs. the big box stores — also, I need another reason excuse to go to B&N to get a pumpkin spice latte!) and pick up Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life, which hits bookstores today. I thought about pre-ordering, but there’s just something about the event it all becomes (this is also why I would rather wait and pick up an album from a local record store than listen to it online if it leaks). I’m very into anticipation.
I was first introduced to Donald Miller by a couple people I worked with at Pura Vida Missions in Costa Rica the summer of 2005, and sometimes when I look back through Blue Like Jazz, I still remember the first time I picked it up. It was rainy and chilly and I was looking after the little snack shop (pulperia) we had set up for the kids. I didn’t want to leave. I probably got about a third of the way through, then was called away. I bought it as soon as I could after I got back to PA.
Audrey Niffenegger’s second book, Her Fearful Symmetry, also comes out today. I’ve read mixed reviews so far, but I’m trying to keep an open mind. I don’t know that anything could be as beautiful as The Time Traveler’s Wife, but I’d like to be pleasantly surprised.
I am super excited to get these books, but I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to read them. I have a stack of Chomsky and Kundera that I just got from the library, so I’ll need to get through that first. So much to look forward to and enjoy!
